I have some general questions about the Psychology major or minor. Who should I see?

The Director of Curricular Studies, the Director of Student Development, or the curriculum secretary.

2.

How do I declare a major or minor in Psychology?

See the Director of Curricular Studies, the Director of Student Development, or the curriculum secretary.

3.

What is the difference between a BA/BS in regards to the courses that are required?

-BA requires 30 credits of PSY coursework along with a sequence in stats.
-BS requires 21 credits of PSY coursework, 2 lecture/labs, statistics and calculus sequences and 24 credits of natural science.

I have forgotten who my psychology advisor is. How can I find out?

See the curriculum secretary or your recorder in the Dean's office of Arts and Sciences.

5.

Can a course in which I received a C- or a D count toward my major or minor?

Yes. You must have at least a 2.0 GPA in the upper-division courses that count toward your major and as long as you have at least a 2.0 in those courses you may include a course in which you earned a passing grade lower than a C.

6.

What do I do to transfer a course toward my major or minor?

Bring a syllabus for the course, not just a course description, to the Director of Curricular Studies along with a completed petition requesting the course be transferred toward your Psychology major or minor. The petition is available in the Dean's office or other departmental offices.

7.

Will any psychology course transfer?

No. We do not accept online courses or courses in which you view videotapes and then take a test.

8.

How many transfer credits can I include in my minor?

Three. This includes AP, CLEP, and regular transfer credits.

9.

How many transfer credits can I include in my major?

The rules require that you complete at least 12 credits of upper division course work at SU in order to complete the major.

10.

Can my methods course in some other area of study count in place of the required PSY 313 Methods course?

No. You must take PSY 313 to complete the methods requirement.

11.

Can a transfer course complete a methods requirement or the requirement for a course in one of the four areas of Psychology?

Yes. Follow the procedures for transferring a course toward your major.

12.

I took AP Psychology but did not get the required 4 on the exam. Do I still have to take PSY 205?

Yes. PSY 205 is a requirement for the major and you must complete it successfully.

13.

Can I go abroad for a semester and still complete my major by my graduation date?

Yes. Plan ahead, especially for required courses.

14.

Can courses I take abroad count toward my major or minor?

Yes. If the courses are SUAbroad courses they appear on your transcript, with grades that count toward your GPA. They count toward your major or minor just as on campus courses do. Courses taken through other institutions are considered transfer courses and you should use the same rules for determining if they will count toward your major or minor.
